IT industry in India was there from the beginning of 1980’s. But, outsourcing IT projects to India started only in the first half of 90’s. Gradually, India also started to open up its economy to the world. Today, major developed countries are outsourcing IT projects to India, in bulk.
I started working on Outsourced IT project since year 2000. I was part of a team at e2Mars and had been heading several eLearning projects as Project Manager, Quality Auditor and Client Co-ordinator. Then I had the opportunity to work for several premium clients like VTC, Logoyes, Ontario Power Generation, Nexgen, NOLL, NETg, NIS, Net Technologies, VistaNet, Harcourt and many more.
Since 2010, I have been providing my services under the brand name CallSP. And I continue to undertake Outsourced Projects as I have excelled in the art of managing clients remotely. Communicating with the client via eMail and documents is a key factor for the success of any Outsourced Project. Some of the other skills needed for the successful completion and delivery of Outsourced projects are Documentation, File management, Team management, Quality Audit, and resource management.
The United States of America has always been a major provider of outsourcing projects to India. There are some beneficial factors that make India one of the most favorite outsourcing partners of the US in the IT industry. They are as follows:
Comparatively lower costs for outsourcing
Money is at the core of all reasons for outsourcing. India has proven to be the most cost effective. Labour costs in country like the US are huge as compared to India. Lower costs directly have an impact and increases the ROI.
Multi-Skilled developers
Here in India the education system is such that a developer would be skilled in several areas. E.g. Web Development, Graphic Design, Interactive presentation, etc. Due to this advantage, clients in the US can get several types of project delivered from one place.
Services with great quality
India has a very skilled workforce employed in IT industry. Kerala, as a state in India, also have a very dynamic and well educated population. Today, different firms in the United States have already hired many efficient workers from Kerala, India. American companies are also starting up branches in India to gain more benefit from the skilled talent pool in India.
No need to hire developers in the US
Developers are not needed to be employed as the work can be outsourced to skilled vendors in India. And the Client can focus in recruiting only managers and senior executives in its US office.
Easy to communicate with
It’s very easy to communicate with Indians compared to people in some other Asian countries. Majority of people in India understand and speak English language, because the educational system in India has always been giving importance to English language even before the country’s independence. Apart from its regional languages, English is one of the official languages used by the government of India.
Advantage of having different time zones
If you hire a vendor located in a country with different time zone like India, the end result would be that your business would always be available 24/7 to your local clients for communications. If in case an emergency pops up, someone will be able to take over and attend to the matter. Besides that, imagine getting your work done even when you’re asleep.
So, in short, outsourcing of projects from the US to India is going to stay and it will benefit both the countries economically. Also would the employment statics of both the countries will improve because of this overseas relationship. Here I have mostly touched some facts about the IT industry. But the benefit of outsourcing is not just limited to the IT industry only. There are various other industries such as Clean Technology industry which has seen massive growth mainly due to the technology and knowledge transfer that happens between the two countries.
